Following an enjoyable Tacky Christmas Sweater party in Stuy Town, I slept at S’s UWS apartment and woke up pleasantly at home in Manhattan. First stop of the morning was Westside Restaurant which is as good a diner as there ever was.

After a light indulgence, we did a bit of shopping with stops at the Sephora on Broadway and the Super Runners Shop on Amsterdam.

S had to work so I took off on a multi-stop mission. First up, was the 2 to the R, getting off at 23rd to pop into the Flatiron and collect some of my CSA spoils (Community Supported Agriculture, in this particular case, from Mountain View Farm in Easthampton, MA).

Now looking like a bedraggled bag lady, I walked down Broadway to brave the Union Square Whole Foods, intent on picking up some hot fresh soup for A who wasn’t feeling good.

Soup in hand, bringing my bag count up to 4, I heaved myself onto the L and rode it to Lorimer. A short but burdened walk and distressing 6 floor hike brought me to A’s door where I stayed for only a moment to drop off the soup and pick up some more of my CSA. Then it was onto an Uber and home, for a very brief spell.

At 5:30 I headed out into the cold to meet A at Dirck the Norseman (a bar in Williamsburg we are partial to).

I got the Matzah Ball and Chicken soup which was hearty and delicious. A got the fish and chips which were likewise.

After a few drinks, we headed to the Brooklyn Night Bazaar which was fun, though on the loud side. We shopped, strolled, ate, and played mini golf. Screen Shot 2014-12-21 at 12.13.45 AM

I got a delicious cider float from Ice & Vice: hot chai spiced pear cider with a dollop of some sort of deliciousness that I believe had orange blossom, and then drizzled with a spicy honey.

Eventually we left for calmer waters and made our way to the Kent Ale House which we both liked a lot–I got another hot cider, A got a beer, and we drooled over the menu that we were both too full to order from.

Fully pre-gamed, we headed off to Glasslands Gallery to see Widowspeak.

This was bittersweet–Glasslands is closing in the new year to make room for the Vice offices and as A’s favorite venue, he was particularly sad to see it go. We got there a little late into Widowspeak’s set but once we fought through a shockingly disinterested crowd and made it towards the front, the show was great.

Glasslands really is a beautiful venue.

Today was our intern’s last day so my first stop of the morning was Baked by Melissa on 14th where I picked up a dozen mini cupcakes of assorted flavors.

The work day ground to a halt around 4 when various holiday parties kicked into gear. I snuck down for some spinach and artichoke dip, puppy chow, and an overly sweet strawberry apple cider.

After work, I headed to Hill Country Chicken to pick up some mashed potatoes that a friend has been jonesing for.

Sadly, I got nothing for myself…

Anyway, after that we headed to KGB on 4th for the monthly Fantastic Fiction reading series. This month the featured authors were my friend Rajan Khannan, and the estimable Steven Gould (of Jumper fame).

I enjoyed at least one more white wine than I should have and caught up with nerdy NYC writerly folk. Even got a free drink on Analog. Ellen Datlow was roaming around taking pictures–her album is here.

After that, I had to scuttle over to Williamsburg to meet A and catch a cab together back to Greenpoint for some epic cookie making. (His company is doing a cookie swap and we obviously must bring our A-game.) The recipe of choice was this little thing from Sally’s Baking Addiction: Candy Cane Kiss Cookies.

A did most of the work and I managed to burn my hand on the oven. In the end though, we think we did good.

Obviously such active cooking making called for a nightcap so we shared a few drinks, some fries, and an over priced and underwhelming chorizo and chicken empanada at my local Greenpoint Heights.

Not pictured is the adorable bar dog sitting on the stool next to mine, wearing a fox bandana.

In case anyone was wondering what bounty the December page of  the Boris Vallejo & Julie Bell annual Fantasy calendar held, behold:

After work a group of us set off for the ice skating rink at Bryant Park (I’m of the opinion that living in New York requires you to do the touristy things at least once).

But sadly, fit wasn’t meant to be because friggen Jay Z and Beyonce booked the whole rink and bar for the night. So it looked more like this:

The group broke up and I wandered the winter market:

Couldn’t help but look up sometimes…

Eventually I met S and we took a B uptown to Santa Fe, a local hangout for the older UWS crowd that serves good margaritas and satisfactory Southwestern.  The grapefruit margarita was damn tasty, the chicken fajitas we shared were fresh, and the tortillas were just how I like ’em.

The meal called for a nightcap of wine drunk out of tumblers and some SATC. Having finished a complete re-watch of the entire series about 5 months prior, S and I decided it was high time to restart. Thus, we got reacquainted with Season 1 Carrie in all her short hair goodness.

Around 11:30 I decided to drag myself back to Brooklyn and was eyeing a cab. But when I stepped outside I thought I’d smoke a cigarette and catch a cab further South. That decision somehow tumbled into resigning myself to walk to the L at Union Square. Google Maps tells me this was 3.5 miles.

It was wonderful and lovely with lots of “Damn New York, you pretty” moments–so much so that I kept the camera away, and just soaked it in.

Dune-1984-Advance-1     Jodorowskys_Dune_poster_usa

Today was Dune Day! Wherein some lovely friends hosted a viewing of David Lynch’s Dune, followed by Jodorowsky’s Dune. (I read the book for the first time in Spring of this year and have been longing for Sting and P-Stew ever since.)

As it was a brunch thing, I picked up some fresh mini bagels from the Bagelsmith on Bedford (which sounds rather like something from a children’s book, doesn’t it?)

and some lox, cream cheese, capers, and an onion.

I did notice some street art on my walk through Williamsburg, as I am wont to do.

After a brief iced chai latte at Atlas,

I met up with A and we hopped on the M, aiming for Fresh Pond Road, which is as grim as any other train stop that’s been used hard and put up wet.

Upon arriving we took over the kitchen and put together this, my very first bagel and lox platter *tear*:

The hosts made some awesome potatoes and egg casserole, in addition to these beauties:

Whilst feasting, we watched some pretty epic Science Fiction theater.

Afterwards, A and I went to Caracas Areba Bar, a Venezuelan place in Williamsburg that specializes in “Latin sloppy Joes.” .

W45A6914

I got the deep fried yucca-potato cakes with chorizo, corn and cilantro which were damn tasty.

IMG_6324

A got the Los Muchacos arepas which had grilled chorizo, spicy white cheese, jalapeños, and sautéed peppers; he seemed to approve.

IMG_6323

After all that was a struggle bus 6 story climb followed by a 40 minute walk home lugging a small suit case worth of clothes in an oversized H&M bag, and finally, some chocolate at the end of the road.
